The Four Math Operations- characterized

Allen M. Stovall

- King Peter Plus, easygoing and fond of good food, gathers a bounty of apples from his orchard.
- Queen Mary Minus, compassionate and concerned, gives away apples to those who are in need.
- Raja Taj Times, a happy-go-lucky magician, instantly multiplies a few apples into many.
- Princess Deborah Divide, a strong but fair-minded leader, makes certain each family in her domain gets an equal share of apples.
~Allen Stovall
I wrote a short play based on these and other math characters, which my Grade One Class delightfully performed on the last day of school.

Lantern walk Martinmas

1)
“Down with darkness, up with light,
Up with sunshine, down with night.
Each of us is one small light,
But together we shine bright.
Go away, darkest, blackest night,
Go away, give way to light! “

2)
“Light in my lantern, light in my heart, light in the world, light up the dark. Oh lantern I will keep the flame so it will not die. Shine it that the world may see how my light does shine. Shine little lantern light up the light. Shine in the darkness oh wondrous light!”
3)
“Walk along, to and fro, with my lantern here we go, up above the moon and stars, shinning down to where we are.”

4)
Walking with my lantern into the night. Chasing the shadows away with light, within , within, my light will never dim.
5)
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine, this little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine, this little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Glimmer, lantern, glimmer
Little stars a-shimmer
Over meadow, moor and dale
Flitter, flutter, elfin veil
Pee-wit, pee-wit, tikka-tikka-tik
Rucoo, rucoo.

Glimmer, lantern, glimmer
Little stars a-shimmer
Over rock and stock and stone
Wandering, skipping, little gnome
Pee-wit, pee-wit, tikka-tikka-tik
Rucoo, rucoo.

I go outside with my lantern, my lantern goes with me
Above the stars are shining bright, down here on Earth shine we.
The cock does crow, the cat meows, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom.
‘Neath heaven’s dome till we go home, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom.

I go outside with my lantern, my lantern goes with me
Above the stars are shining bright, down here on Earth shine we.
So shine your light through the still dark night, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom
‘Neath heaven’s dome till we go home, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom.
